Beginners Guide to Customization Creation
Before your customers can upload their photos onto a product, you need to set up the customization in the app backend. This article walks you through creating the customization, adding your product image, and defining the print area.
Create a New Customization
- Go to the "Customizations" tab and click "Add Customization".
- Click "Create Customization" on the pop-up in the "Product Builder" segment.
- Enter a title for your customization and click "Confirm".
- Optionally, hover over the thumbnail to upload a product preview image. This makes it easier to find the customization in your list later.

Set Up Your View
Your new customization already includes one default view. Click the dropdown button on the left of the customization row to expand it. Update the view name and thumbnail to match your product.
If you need additional views (for example, a front and back), click the "Add View" button on the right of the customization row to add a new view and give it a name and thumbnail image.
Once your view is ready, click "Open in Builder" to open it in the Product Builder.

Add the Product Image
Your product mockup is the background layer that customers will see in the designer. It can be excluded from the print file.
- In the Product Builder, click "Image" in the "Add Elements" section.
- Upload your product image or use an image from the media gallery, and give the layer a title.
- Select the layer, then go to Element Options > General and switch on the "Exclude in Export" toggle. This ensures the background image is not included in the production file when an order is placed.

Set Up the Printing Box
The printing box defines the physical area that will be printed on your product. Enter its dimensions before placing it on the canvas.
- Open "View Options" > "Print Export". Select "Set Custom Size" from the Print Size dropdown and enter the exact physical dimensions of your print area in millimeters.
- Click the "Printing Box" button above the canvas to resize and place printing box to the canvas.
- Make sure it covers the area of the product image where printing should occur.
- Also check the "Printing Box as Bounding Box" switch to make sure custom elements are centered in and limited to this area.

Link to a Shopify Product
- Switch to the "Shopify Products" tab.
- Find the product you want to link and assign your customization to it.
- Click the second button on the right to preview your product and verify the setup on your storefront.
